Naoussa is the island’s cosmopolitan choice, with its picturesque little harbour, fishing boats, tourist shops and restaurants. Parikia, on the other hand, is the island’s main gateway thanks to its port. As the capital of Paros and the island’s main port, it combines the charm of Cycladic architecture with vibrant nightlife and important historical monuments, such as Panagia Ekatontapiliani, one of the oldest Christian monuments in Greece. Its old town, the impressive Venetian Castle and its narrow alleys make it a destination worth exploring before heading inland.

Lefkes

If you are looking for an equally picturesque, but perhaps more authentic side of Paros, you should head up to Lefkes. The most traditional village on the island, Lefkes is built amphitheatrically on a hill and offers stunning views, narrow cobbled alleys, whitewashed houses and beautiful bougainvillea. It is a true mountain village, ideal for those seeking relaxation, walks through charming narrow streets and moments close to nature. It is sure to enchant you.

Location and History

Lefkes is located in the inland part of Paros, about 10 kilometres from Parikia. It was once the island’s capital and was founded in the 15th century in a protected location, away from pirate raids. Its name comes from the many poplar trees that used to grow in the area.

Architecture

The village is built amphitheatrically on a hill, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. It features narrow stone-paved alleys, whitewashed houses with blue doors and windows, traditional white houses, and plenty of bougainvillea decorating its courtyards. Cars are not allowed in the alleys, which helps preserve the village’s traditional and peaceful atmosphere.

Attractions

In Lefkes, you should definitely visit the village’s main church, Agia Triada. The church of Agia Triada is crafted from local white marble and is one of the most impressive landmarks in the village. You should also walk along the old stone-paved Byzantine Trail, also known as the Byzantine road, which starts in Lefkes and, through a beautiful route surrounded by nature, leads to the village of Prodromos. It is also worth visiting the Folklore Museum, which presents the history and traditions of the village.

Marpissa

Every August, the “Routes in Marpissa” festival takes place. It is a three-day experiential cultural event with activities that highlight local tradition and culture.
