Where is Red Beach?

Red Beach is located near the archaeological site of Akrotiri, in the southwestern part of Santorini, along the island’s famous caldera coastline. It is about a 20-minute drive from Fira and approximately 40 minutes from Oia. You can reach it by car or bus to the Akrotiri parking area, followed by a short ten-minute walk along a path that leads to the beach. Alternatively, you can approach it by boat from Akrotiri’s small port or nearby beaches.

Why Red Beach at Santorini is so famous?

The striking red cliffs rising behind the shore are the result of the island’s volcanic activity forming dramatic rock formations that define the beach’s unique character. The intense color of the red rocks, combined with the dark pebbles and the deep blue sea, creates an otherworldly picture. Many visitors say the experience feels like swimming on Mars.

Red Beach’s fame has spread far beyond the island of Santorini. International media and travel guides have ranked it among the world’s most spectacular beaches. National Geographic calls it “the most famous” of Santorini’s beaches because of its dramatic setting of red and black volcanic rocks. Condé Nast Traveler often recommends it as one of the most “colorful and impressive” beaches in Greece. Travel guides and photographers worldwide, such as David Angel, highlight it as one of Europe’s most striking landscapes.

From the iconic red rocks of Red Beach to the sculptural cliffs of Vlychada Beach, Santorini’s southern coast offers some of the most extraordinary beaches in the Aegean.

What to do at Red Beach?

Although small, Red Beach offers experiences you’ll never forget. Swimming in its deep, crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea is already special, but the seabed is also great for snorkeling. The dramatic backdrop makes it one of the island’s most photographed beaches. During the off season, Red Beach reveals a quieter side, making it ideal for those seeking relaxation.

For comfort, you’ll find some sunbeds and umbrellas available. Many visitors, however, prefer to lay their towels directly on the sand for a more authentic experience. You can also rent pedal boats or canoes to explore the coast from the sea. In some secluded areas, nudism is permitted, reflecting the beach’s free-spirited vibe.

Red Beach is the perfect destination for a full day, welcoming swimmers and sunbathers alike to unwind under the sun while taking in Santorini’s extraordinary volcanic landscape. As the afternoon fades, staying to witness the famous Santorini sunset becomes a truly unforgettable experience, as the red rocks are bathed in warm golden light above the shimmering Aegean Sea.

If you wish to explore more of Santorini’s coastline, Perivolos Beach is another popular destination, known for its long stretch of black sand and vibrant seaside atmosphere. Located close to Red Beach, White Beach is another remarkable spot, known for its striking white cliffs and crystal-clear waters.
