The black beach of Chios is an impressive beach, which is located next to the village of Emporios. It is the most famous beach of the island and it got its color from the eruption of a volcano in ancient times. It is a black beach with crystal clear and icy waters. It has round black pebbles and the sea has a dark color, too.

NEA MONI OF CHIOS

Nea Moni of Chios is the most important of the monasteries of the island and is considered a monument of international importance. It was founded in 1042 AD. It is known worldwide for its exquisite mosaic art and in 1990 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to monastic tradition, the monastery's catholicon was built in this place where three ascetics from Chios had found a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, hanging on a myrtle branch. Although they repeatedly carried her to their cave, she turned to myrtle, which prompted them to build a small temple of the Virgin on the spot. The special structure of the Monastery and the mosaics of rare beauty that adorn the interior of the temple, will captivate you.
