History

Although the beloved island was known by many different names in antiquity, it was only with the arrival of the Dryopes and their leader, Paros, that the island received its official name.

Paros has been inhabited since prehistoric times and is one of the key centers of the Cycladic civilization. On the hill of the Kastro in Parikia, archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a settlement dating to the peak of the Cycladic culture, which flourished between 3200 and 2000 BC.

In the centuries that followed, the island experienced remarkable cultural and economic growth. Its lignite and, most famously, its highly prized Parian marble led to the establishment of numerous sculpture workshops. Paros also produced significant artistic talent, including the celebrated lyric poet Archilochus.

Around 490 BC, with the rise of Persian power, Paros entered alliances first with the Persians and later with the Athenians after the Persian defeat. During the Classical Period, the island was home to exceptional sculptors who created aesthetically refined public buildings, theaters, and temples.

From the Hellenistic Kingdoms through the Roman Empire and later the Frankish conquest of Constantinople, Paros’ history was marked by constant shifts in political control. It wasn’t until after World War II, specifically in the 1960s that the island saw a turning point: migration flows to Piraeus and abroad slowed, and the people of Paros began to focus on the island’s most valuable modern resourc tourism.

Golden Beach (Chrissi Akti)

Golden Beach is undoubtedly one of Paros’ most popular beaches. Located 22 km from Parikia and very close to the seaside village of Drios, its fine golden sand gives it its name. Stretching 700 meters, the beach offers restaurants, cafés, and a variety of water sports, including windsurfing. The beach is fully equipped with amenities, and the surrounding area offers plenty of hotels and rental accommodations.

Kolymbithres
