The Best Beaches of Folegandros

If you’re someone who dreams of the perfect Greek summer with crystal-clear waters, hidden coves, and tranquil landscapes straight out of a postcard, then Folegandros island is the island you’re looking for. Small but full of surprises, this whitewashed island is an ideal destination in Greece for those who love the traditional Cyclades, serenity, natural beauty, and landmarks such as the Church of Panagia.

In this travel guide, we’ll take you to the best beaches of the island and provide all the essential information you need to plan an unforgettable summer trip.

For Peace & Seclusion

Here, you won’t find beach bars, loungers, or noise. Just the sea, the endless blue of the Aegean, and the kind of peace that makes these secluded beaches feel like true hidden gems.

Katergo

We begin with Folegandros’s most famous “gem”: Katergo. A beach that looks like a movie set, with white pebbles, sparkling waters, and dramatic cliffs embracing it. You can get there either by boat from the port of Karavostasis or by hiking for 30–40 minutes along a path that starts from the road.

Katergo is completely unorganized, but that’s part of its charm. Bring water, sunscreen, and maybe an umbrella, and get ready to swim in one of the most magical beaches of the Cyclades.

Galifos

If you crave total peace and minimal crowds, then make a stop at Galifos beach. Accessible only on foot (about 15 minutes from Agali), it captivates with its simplicity. Some of the rental rooms nearby even lack electricity. This small beach with crystal-clear waters is perfect for those who appreciate solitude.

Livadaki

Livadaki is a small paradise for hiking lovers and those seeking isolation. It is located on the southwest side of the island and you can reach it either by boat from Agkali (15–20 minutes) or by hiking from Ano Meria.

It boasts stunningly transparent turquoise waters and flat rock slabs on the right side, considered by many the best sunbathing spot.

Agios Nikolaos

Situated just steps from Agkali on the sunny southern coast, Agios Nikolaos is a calm and charming beach. With golden sand mixed with pebbles and trees providing natural shade, it’s a peaceful place to relax under the summer sun. You’ll also find two taverns, including Papalagi, serving local dishes, as well as the picturesque church of St. Nikolaos perched above the small dock.

Ampeli

A well-hidden beach on the northwest of the island, popular in summer thanks to its protection from the northern winds. It has pebbles and is great for snorkeling and exploring the seabed.

Close to Chora, Agkali is the perfect choice if comfort and convenience matter most. With its golden sand and shallow waters, this sandy beach is ideal for families, while easy access by car or local bus makes getting there simple. You will find tavernas by the sea serving fresh fish and cold beer, as well as a charming boutique hotel nearby. If you are looking for another option close to Chora, Vorina Beach is also worth considering.

Agali is also the perfect base to explore nearby beaches like Agios Nikolaos beach and Livadaki, either on foot or by boat.

Karavostasis

The beach at Karavostasis, the island’s port, is another must-visit. Ideal for your first or last swim, it offers easy access, sand, and clear waters. Its location is another big plus, with shops, cafe, and tavernas just a step from your towel, making it easy to enjoy a relaxed meal and try matsata, a local specialty you shouldn’t miss, while nearby Livadi beach and Pountaki are also lovely options for a swim.

Just a few meters away you will find tavernas, cafés, accommodations, and mini-markets. The quieter beaches of Vardia and Latinaki are also nearby and perfect for mixing things up during the day.

Sea Excursions Are a Must!

To truly experience the magic of Folegandros, a boat trip is essential. It’s the best way to discover the island’s beautiful beaches, where waters are so clear they almost seem unreal. Steep cliffs, caves, hidden coves, sandy shores like Katergo, Livadaki, Agios Nikolaos, and Agios Georgios, as well as Ligaria, a peaceful pebble beach, can only be fully appreciated from the sea. Hop on a boat from Karavostasis and see the island from a whole new, more authentic perspective.

  • – Bring water, snacks, and umbrellas: Most beaches lack facilities.
